An isolated and neglected popular area is converted into an integrated city neighbourhood
Dam is situated in the north of Antwerp and was sandwiched between the railway marshalling yard, Noordersingel, Lobroekdok and Schijnpoortweg. Because of the mix of homes and businesses, townhouses and freestanding volumes, residual space and social housing, the neighbourhood did not come across as a coherent whole. A connecting tunnel to Park Spoor Noord under the railway provided an important stimulus for this languishing neighbourhood. Several construction and renovation projects were implemented to reconnect this neighbourhood with the city. The transformation is clearly noticeable in the Hardenvoort part of the neighbourhood, near Dam square and in other places.
A central square will have to connect all the various parts of this neighbourhood in the future. The large 7.5-hectare slaughterhouse site offers the space to do this as it can be used for various functions, including housing as the main function, combined with services, recreation and business.
