Modernist Antwerp

Braem, Stijnen, Van Steenbergen,...

In the south of the city you find a unique, modernist-inspired neighbourhood, called “Tentoonstellingswijk” and Kiel. For centuries this area was a green area on the southern outskirts of Antwerp, which was built up on the occasion of the 1920 Olympic Games and the World Expo of 1930. Buildings by Le Corbusier, Eduard Van Steenbergen, Leon Stijnen, Huib Hoste, Renaat Braem and other Modernists today reveal a sample of divergent visions on modern living, which inspired the architectural world at the time: gems of New Objectivity alongside social housing, according to the most progressive principles of that time.
